The Priesthood

Could the Priesthood be your calling?

Do you have a longing and thirst to bring souls to Jesus Christ,
the source of eternal salvation?

Why Priesthood?

Our world needs priests now more than ever. A priest is chosen by God to carry on the ministry of Jesus and proclaim the Kingdom of God. As a spiritual father, by leading people to heaven, a priest’s work will last for eternity.

“Do not labor for the food which perishes, but for the food which endures to eternal life, which the Son of man will give to you” (John 6:27)

Priests are irreplaceable and indispensable.

Priests exist to proclaim the truth of Christ and His Gospel so that we may live eternally with Him in heaven. The priest works not for food that spoils at the end of our lives on earth, but for our eternal nourishment. As a priest you can bring hope, compassion, healing, and understanding to those who need it most.

Priests show us the way to Heaven.

Once, when Saint John Vianney, Patron Saint of Priests, was on his way to his assignment as the parish priest in the little town of Ars, France, he got lost. He found himself wandering in a field in bad weather. When he discovered a path on which to walk, he encountered a young man who was only 12 or 14 years old. He said to him, “Young man, if you show me the way to Ars, I will show you the way to Heaven!” This simple priest could make such a bold statement because he understood his priestly identity and the importance of the Priesthood. He knew that priests lead people to eternal life.

Our world needs salvation.

“For everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved. But how can they call on him in whom they have not believed? And how can they believe in him of whom they have not heard? And how can they hear without someone to preach?” (Romans 10:13-15)

These questions are relevant to us today — in our world and in our Archdiocese of Boston. The Gospel transforms and gives life to those who believe and follow, but if there is no one to proclaim it, then the world will not be able to receive it. Priests exist to proclaim the life-changing and life-giving Gospel of Jesus Christ. But Saint Paul also asks: “How can people preach unless they are sent?”
